Accounting student is awarded VSCPA scholarship

Junior accounting major Kelci Simonsen is the recipient of a $1,500 scholarship from the Roanoke Chapter of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA).

Simonsen was presented with the scholarship during VSCPA's Student Night event Sept. 19 in Roanoke. She attended the event, held in downtown Roanoke, with 38 other RU accounting majors and Accounting Professor Helen Roybark.

"Kelci is very deserving of the VSCPA scholarship. She brings both energy and enthusiasm to all that she does," Roybark said. "I am very pleased that she received the 2014 VSCPA scholarship."

At the Student Night event, participants had an opportunity to talk with local CPAs during a social hour, listened to a panel discussion and Q&A led by local CPAs. The conversation topic was core skills for today's accounting professional, Roybark said.

RU was one of five higher education institutions represented at the event, and Simonsen was one of four RU accounting majors in consideration for this scholarship.

"I was so very proud of all of our RU students," Roybark said.
