Del. Joseph Yost spent time answering questions about the inner workings of the Virginia General Assembly at the 72nd Annual Virginia Boys State.

The first full day of the 72nd annual American Legion Boys State of Virginia kicked off at Radford University on Monday, June 16, with visits to campus by a number of state legislators.

Del. Joseph Yost '06, M.S. '08 of Virginia's 12th district, which includes Radford, spoke to Boys State attendees about the challenges and rewards of becoming involved in government.

"Serving in the House is one of the highest honors I've ever had in my life," Yost told the young men.

At 28, the delegate is the youngest-serving member of the Virginia General Assembly, a fact that Boys State attendees connected with.

"No matter your age, you have to set the path and make sure people know you're mature enough to do this,” Yost said. “Prove to them that you're ready."

Virginia Boys State is a weeklong leadership action program, attended this year by more than 800 male high school juniors from around the Commonwealth. The young men, who arrived Sunday, June 15, will spend the rest of the week immersed in the principles of the United States government. They will participate in mock legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs. Some of the top leaders in Virginia government, including Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam and Attorney General Mark Herring will be among the speakers to provide participants with valuable lessons in citizenship and the governmental process.
