President Kyle recognized by DePaul Community Resources' "Women of Achievement" award

President Penelope W. Kyle was recognized for achievements in education by DePaul Community Resources at its 12th annual Women of Achievement Awards Luncheon.

Radford University President Penelope W. Kyle was recognized by DePaul Community Resources at its 12th annual Women of Achievement Awards Luncheon.

The Oct. 7 event was held at the Sheraton Roanoke Hotel & Conference Center and was emceed by Tara Wheeler of Fox 21/27.

Founded in 1977, DePaul is a nonprofit organization that provides child, adult and family services. The organization's more than 200 employees provide assistance in such areas as foster care, independent living, adoption, community services and respite support. DePaul serves more than 600 individuals each day at its 18 locations across the Commonwealth.

President Kyle was among 43 women to be nominated for the awards, which encompassed 11 different categories: Arts, Business, Education, Government/Politics, Open Hearts, Health/Sciences, Human Relations, Law, Religion, Social Services and Volunteerism. She was awarded the 2014 Women of Achievement Award for Education, presented to her by DePaul Community Resources President and CEO Amanda Stanley. All of the awardees also received a letter of recognition on behalf of Sen. Mark Warner, presented by Lou Kadiri, the senator's deputy state director.

"I am tremendously honored to receive this recognition from DePaul Community Resources," President Kyle said. "It was truly humbling to be in the company of all the Women of Achievement nominees who inspire me with their outstanding leadership and service to our communities. I also want to thank the staff, volunteers and supporters of DePaul for their selfless commitment to bettering the lives of the citizens of Southwest Virginia. True to their theme of ‘Hope and Belonging,' they are making a profound impact on the families and children they interact with each day."

Also representing RU at the Women of Achievement luncheon was Robyn Porterfield, Radford University assistant vice president for advancement. Porterfield also serves on the 2014-15 DePaul Community Resources Board of Directors.

"The Women of Achievement event is designed to recognize and honor amazing women across the Commonwealth of Virginia," Porterfield said. "President Kyle is so deserving of being named the winner in the education category because of her great accomplishments in her professional career, as well as her personal commitment as an adoptive parent."
