The Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative (SAWC) has selected Radford University graduate student Wyshona Lawson as the winner of the fifth annual Rita Riddle Creative Writing Scholarship.

The scholarship, valued at more than $800, is funding for Lawson's enrollment at the Writers Workshop at Hindman Settlement School, Hindman, Ky., this summer.  The award also includes a scholarship to the annual SAWC gathering at Highlander, Tenn., in October.

The judges for this year's scholarship competition were Ron Houchin, an Ohio poet and SAWC member; Theresa Burriss, director of the RU Appalachian Regional and Rural Studies Center; and RU English Instructor Jim Minick, an SAWC member.

The late Rita Riddle, an English professor at Radford for many years, was an active writer, poet and advocate for keeping Appalachian heritage alive through writing.
