Greek Week Features Concerts, Games and Giving Back

"No matter the beat, we are all Greek" was the motto for hundreds of Radford University fraternity and sorority members during the 2012 Greek Week celebration.

greek week fun

The philanthropy competition had some Greeks feeling a bit cheeky for a great cause.

With a full turnout from RU's 20 Greek student organizations, the week included a field day, pool games, a philanthropy competition, concerts, cookouts, a battle of the air bands, chariot races and more. Activities the week of March 25 were coordinated by a committee of representatives from the campus Intrafraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Council and National Panhellenic Council.

IFC President Brian Kincaid said the enthusiastic showing of solidarity and support was incredibly rewarding. "Greek Week was a huge success," he said. "The main reason we have Greek Week is to promote collaboration among Greek organizations. We see that when our organizations come together, we really can do great things."

The motivational speaker for the week was T.J. Sullivan, one of the founders of the Pi Kappa Phi chapter at Indiana University. Since graduating, Sullivan has traveled extensively and spoken to millions of college students across the nation about his passion for Greek life and the benefits he gained from his involvement.

Each of the individual Greek Week events counted toward a final overall score, with the winning fraternity, sorority and overall highest-scoring Greek organization to be announced at the annual RU Greek Awards at 6 p.m. April 24 in Muse Banquet Hall.

tug of war

Building team spirit with events like a tug of war is one of the aims of Greek Week.

"It was a really a great week and capped the whole year," said Robert Marias, RU's assistant director for student activities and Greek Life. "We've been making a lot of changes, a lot of improvements, and the students have been working really hard. It all culminated in Greek Week just being a wonderful, visible expression of the unity, the camaraderie and the spirit of the community."

Coinciding with Greek Week, 23 new initiates were announced into the Gamma Gamma chapter of the national Greek academic honor society, Gamma Sigma Alpha. Membership is limited to members of the Greek community with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above at the start of junior year or a 3.5 GPA or higher in any semester during junior or senior years.

Kincaid said the induction of RU's new Greek scholars was among the week's highlights. "Hats off to these fraternity men and sorority women for their achievements," he said.

Twister!

Silliness is part of the celebration with a lawn-size version of the game Twister.

"I am very proud to see these new members being initiated, but it's something that all Greeks should strive for," he said. "I've always been a strong supporter of the saying 'You are a student first' and being able to balance your academic work as well as your membership in your organization. That's an impressive achievement in and of itself."

An initiation ceremony will be at 8:30 p.m. April 25 in Heth 14 to honor the following Greek students' outstanding academic achievements.
