COBE Bids Farewell to Venerable Whitt Hall

Since decades ago, when business was part of the home economics curriculum at Radford College, business students on campus have called Whitt Hall their academic home.

To say goodbye to Whitt—and to the College of Business and Economics' (COBE) other departmental locations in Davis, Downey and Fairfax halls—the 2012 COBE graduating class at Radford University will host "Farewell to Whitt," a celebration for faculty, staff, alumni and friends Friday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Whitt Lawn.

The new COBE building at Tyler Avenue and Jefferson Street overlooking campus is scheduled for completion in August.

"As we prepare to come together in the new COBE building, the students want us to reflect on the legacy of COBE excellence built by our generations of alumni in this distinctive place, Whitt Hall," COBE Dean Faye Gilbert said. "We welcome the invitation of this senior class of business students for a fun gathering before forging ahead to a new, exciting future in our new academic home."

Food, music, games and opportunities to record Whitt Hall memories are among the activities planned for "Farewell to Whitt," said Beau Proctor, president of the COBE Student Advisory Board. Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity, will host a cornhole tournament for prizes. Other games and raffles are scheduled as well as tours of the new COBE building.

"Whitt Hall has been good to me. It is the home of the student organizations where my opportunities really started," said Proctor, a senior accounting and finance major from Fairfax.

"Farewell to Whitt" will cap two days of semester-end activities for COBE. The Spring Class of 2012 will be inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma honorary business fraternity on Thursday, April 26, at 5 p.m. in Heth 043, followed by the annual COBE Honors Banquet at 6 p.m. in the Muse Hall Banquet Room. On Friday, April 27, the COBE Advisory Board and the board of the Student Managed Investment Portfolio Organization will convene for their end-of-semester meetings.

The 2012 COBE Senior Class, the final COBE class to graduate from Whitt, will gather for a picture in front of the building before joining the alumni ranks at the college's graduation ceremonies on McConnell Lawn at noon Saturday, May 5.
