Collegiate Honors Society Inducts 63 Members

The Radford University Chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars inducted 63 new members recently during a ceremony and reception in Muse Banquet Hall.

The scholars join the university's 455 other honors students, making it one of the largest memberships since the Radford chapter was formed in 2002. The society is the nation's premiere organization for students who have reached a high level of academic success and is the only society to recognize outstanding academic achievement among first- and second-year college students.

Anne Marie Warren, chapter vice president, welcomed the students, their families and friends, and introduced President Penelope W. Kyle, who spoke on the significance of membership in the honors society.

"In this room there are future educators, health care providers, scientists, writers, politicians, artists -- and maybe even another university president," Kyle said. Quoting South African President Nelson Mandela, she said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." She encouraged students to continue to strive for excellence and to use their education to change the world.

The president introduced Dean of Admissions James Pennix, who said students’ experiences through membership in the society can enhance not only their academic careers but their professional and personal lives. Pennix, who earned his master's degree from Radford University, emphasized three key elements associated with being a member of the society: scholarship, leadership and service.

“This is what our mission is all about. There is a great wealth of resources here. I do challenge you to get involved,” Pennix said. “Take advantage of this opportunity. I encourage you to go out into the communities around you and give back what you have learned.”

One of those inducted was Elizabeth Rizzuto of Moneta, a sophomore history major. “This really makes you feel as though you've done something wonderful with your education or that what you are doing is worthwhile. The ceremony itself was very nice. President Kyle and Dean Pennix did a wonderful job and made the experience that much better.”

The stated mission of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars is:

  • to encourage and promote high standards throughout the collegiate experience.

  • to provide opportunities for personal growth and leadership development.

  • to organize and encourage learning opportunities through community service.

  • to foster an overall appreciation for the value of a higher education.
