University Observes ‘America Recycles Day’

A free public screening of the film “Tapped,” a documentary that explores whether access to clean drinking water is a basic human right or a commodity to be bought and sold, will be held at Radford University Tuesday to observe America Recycles Day.

The latest in the RU sustainABILITY movie series, “Tapped” will be presented at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Hurlburt Student Center.

Since 1997, communities across the country have come together on America Recycles Day, the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States.

Radford University has recently expanded its recycling efforts, said Stan Wilkinson, recycling coordinator. The university community can now recycle most plastics at bins located across campus. Plastics with resin codes 1-7 can now be dropped into the bins for proper recycling. RU previously accepted only resin codes 1 and 2, yet was able to recycle more than 15 tons in FY 2010-11.

Through the “Get a Charge out of Recycling” program, the university community can now recycle its used batteries at about 30 locations. RU Recycling collects used batteries in bins that separate them by categories:  rechargeable and non-rechargeable, or single use. Used batteries generated on campus can be dropped off at the following locations:

  • Hurlburt information desk
  • Hurlburt Student Organization Academic Resource (SOAR) Center, Room 235
  • IT Technology Support Services Center, Heth 166
  • Main entrance circulation desk, McConnell Library 302
  • Recycling office, Room 123, in RU Facilities’ Armstrong Complex
  • Resident directors’ offices in each residence hall

In its campus-wide recycling efforts, RU will again participate in RecycleMania, a friendly competition among college and university recycling programs in North America and Canada. Schools compete in different categories during eight weeks each spring to see which institution can tally the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of waste per capita or have the highest recycling rate.
