“Gently used” furnishings donated last spring by Radford University students moving out of dorm rooms and apartments are now on sale at the YMCA Thrift Store in the Radford Shopping Plaza, next to the Kroger supermarket, in Fairlawn. The sale began Monday, Aug. 15, and continues through Friday, Aug. 26.

Radford University’s Spring 2011 YToss? recycling campaign generated more than 5 tons of furniture and other household items, said Stan Wilkinson, the university’s recycling coordinator. Items donated this year included mini-refrigerators, lofts and desks, all of which have been cleaned for reuse.

Tracy Keith, manager of the thrift store, said, “All of the material is good, sound stuff and is reasonably priced. Students and families who are setting up housekeeping should make this a first stop as they shop for the things they need.”

Radford’s move-out recycling program, held on behalf of the YMCA at Virginia Tech, is a way to reduce waste going into landfills and sustain other YMCA programs.
