When two family members made Radford University their educational home, Zach McCoy took notice. When it was his turn to begin his college search, McCoy knew Radford University would be at the top of the list.

“I applied to schools both in Virginia and out of state and started making visits,” he said. “Once I visited Radford, I saw what an engaging environment it was – engaging not just for educational purposes, but for student life and student activities as well. I knew I was going to truly find my niche and get involved in ways that would help me find my way to success.”

McCoy wasted no time getting involved in student government. Most notably, McCoy was elected president of the Student Government Association for the 2013-2014 academic year.  His interest in government stems from his father’s career as assistant secretary of the Air Force during President Ronald Reagan’s administration.

“My father’s governmental career taught me the importance of being engaged in policy and in important changes that will impact the country,” he said. “I look up to my father. Taking part in governmental action someday is what I feel is my calling. I have a true sense of patriotism and I think that being a part of trying to better your country each and every day is a sincere duty and privilege.”

As a political aficionado, McCoy’s long-held career aspiration is to either work on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., or in the intelligence community.

“If I were to work on the Hill, I would like that opportunity to eventually go into a field such as lobbying or political consulting so I could really be a part of true action,” he said. “I also desire to work in the intelligence community because I want to help protect our nation so that we can all live in a safer world each and every day.”
