Lily Field knows exactly what she wants to do with her future: serve her country as an active duty nurse in the United States Army. Her goal after graduating from high school was to find a university with a strong nursing program and a high-quality Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) program. Radford University was a natural choice.

For Field, Radford University has it all – a beautiful campus, professors who care about their students and, most importantly, quality academic programs that give her both practical skills and intellectual experiences that provide an enriching education.

Balancing the demands of one of the top nursing programs in the Commonwealth and the requirements of ROTC is sometimes challenging, but always rewarding. Field credits her professors and the ROTC staff for helping her balance her rigorous course load with her outside activities.

“ROTC offers a great support system and you really make great friends through the program,” Field said.

While her day begins before most students’ – at 6 a.m. for physical training – that early start has taught Field to manage her time and remain focused on her future. While she has fun and engages in campus life, she’s a dedicated student whose education is her first priority.

“I’d tell incoming students to prioritize and think about why you are here – to get an education,” she said. “Always keep the big picture in mind and don’t let anything interfere with achieving your goals.”

Following graduation, Field hopes to be commissioned into the United States Army and then deployed to a field hospital to treat wounded soldiers before they are stable enough to be transported. Simply put, Field says, “I intend to make the Army my career. Radford is preparing me well for that.”
