Kirk Scholars Online Application

Before you apply, please read the following information carefully. All applicants are required to have a GPA of at least 3.0 in order to qualify for the Kirk Scholars Program.

The online application consists of the following:

  • Personal information. This includes your name, address, phone numbers, email address, cumulative GPA, major/minor(s), and the names of two references who will write a letter of recommendation for you.
  • A list of extra-curricular and community activities.
  • A personal essay. The essay should be no more than 500 words and explain why you want to be a Kirk Scholar. 
    • Discuss how your participation in the program would enrich your education and enhance your career goals. You may wish to include the following in your essay:
      • Why is it important to develop knowledge of the Chinese language, history, and culture?
      • How will the travel to China benefit you educationally and personally?
      • What previous event or experience has prompted you to apply?
      • What previous language and travel experiences do you have?
      • How successful have you been so far in mastering a foreign language?
  • Two letters of recommendations from educational or community leaders. These letters must be submitted by your reference in one of three ways. Student Application Verification

  • I understand that if I am selected as a Zylphia Shu-En Kirk Scholar finalist, I may be contacted via phone or e-mail for a phone interview.
  • If I am chosen to participate in the program, I agree to register with the other Zylphia Shu-En Kirk Scholars for the Fall Semester Mandarin course Chinese 101 or 201 (depending on placement), and will maintain at least a B average in my Mandarin class work.
  • I understand that my references must individually submit my letter of recommendations to the International Education Center at the address provided above.
