Tommy Iafrate is a stage director, musical director, arts educator, and pit musician, and is thrilled to engage in these many passions as an Assistant Professor here at Radford University. Tommy earned his MFA. in Directing from Western Illinois University, where he directed such productions as She Loves Me, Tartuffe, The Glass Menagerie, Mauritius, and Dog Sees God. He previously earned his BA in Musical Theatre and Physics from Rhode Island College.
During the summer, Tommy is the Artistic Director of the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre, a summer stock company in Clinton, Iowa. His productions on the Showboat include Into the Woods, The Drowsy Chaperone, Evita, Bye Bye Birdie, High School Musical, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. He has previously served as the Artistic Director for Kaleidoscope Theatre, an inclusive touring company specializing in theatre for young audiences. At age 5, he also played a tree in their production of Little Red Riding Hood.
A professional musical director and musician, Tommy has worked on seven productions with Goodspeed Musicals, including their tour of Pippin with Micky Dolenz, and three Royal Caribbean cruises. Some favorite musical directing credits are Rent, Altar Boyz, Footloose, and The Full Monty. He has vocally coached students for auditions that have earned them Broadway contracts. As an instrumentalist he performs on piano, saxophone, clarinet, flute, and oboe.
Also an actor, Tommy’s favorite performance experience was in Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall’s Cabaret, a show with which he performed regionally and toured the United States, Canada, Korea, and Japan.
Tommy is a proud member of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and The Golden Key International Honour Society and an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. In 2012, Tommy received the Student Directing Award at his region’s American College Theatre Festival and was a directing fellow at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
