Direct from Beijing, the National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China to perform at RU

National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China

­One of the most acclaimed acrobatic troupes in China, Direct from Beijing, the National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China is onstage at the Bondurant Auditorium Oct. 15 at 8 p.m.

A show of jaw-dropping feats of grace and agility; this is the first production presented in the Radford University 2014-15 University Performance Series. Since 1951, this elite company of international award-winning artists transforms the ancient art form of acrobatics into a contemporary concert of adrenaline-infused beauty.

Gymnasts, contortionists, jugglers and dancers perform for two acts meshing meshes traditional and modern entertainment for audiences of all ages.

“We are very excited to have these internationally renowned artists visit our university and community,” said Margaret Devaney, dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts,  “The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China is a wonderful example of the diverse programming that the University Performance Series brings to our campus”.

Founded in 1951, more than two hundred artists from the National Acrobats of The People’s Republic of China who have won the gold and silver awards at international and national acrobatic competitions and circus festivals.

In addition to winning awards, the company played a historic role in peace relations. According to its official bio, “In 1972, the Company visited the United States and were invited as guests to the White House by President Richard Nixon while on tour. As performing arts ambassadors, the Company played a key role in the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, whose governments at that time had no formal diplomatic ties.”
