About 'Love Yourself'

Love Youself

from Dr. Richard Bay

First and foremost I dedicate this artwork and my words to: Mrs. Patty Bay, Dr. Harry McCoy and the staff of Blue Ridge Cancer Care.

The piece “Love Yourself” is about coming to an understanding of this disease (cancer) – the changes that take place (physically, mentally and spiritually) to you, your family, friends, whomever surrounds you. What is important is you must believe in the love that surrounds you and is sent to aid in your healing. The two birds in the middle are of the the greatest significance. Last summer I lost two very dear friends – both great artists, both gentleman and teachers and both intellectually gifted; Mr. Edward LeShock and Mr. Eric Abraham. The birds represent the creative freedom found in both men's hearts.

After their deaths, I found great solace in Japanese wood block prints and purchased several of various birds and rich foliage. I have had new tattoos added to my body with similar subjects. The birds are a gift to all – their color, song, the beauty of their flight. Just to have them in one's presence is peaceful. So the two in the center of the print and the heart that surrounds them are about finding peace (like that found within self). From this comes the understanding of that inner beauty within yourself and how you can use it to conquer this enemy that has invaded your body. Does it work? I believe it does! Without it what do you have? Anger, hate, despair, and each take the strength we need to fight. Love yourself and you can win this fight for yourself. More importantly you can show all those who are still fighting, your courage and strength.
