The Artful Lawyer's Art Through the Eras juried exhibition in Blacksburg features over 50 works from regional artists, including former and current Radford University students Shaun C. Whiteside (RU '11), Nick Milinazzo (RU '12) and Allie Kelley (RU '15). The exhibition's opening reception was Jan. 28, during which juror Robin Scully Boucher awarded Whiteside first place and Kelley second place.

For the Artful Lawyer's first 2015 show in their regular “Whet Your Palette” series, they invited artists to take inspiration from the old masters.

Working in painting, textile, photography, or mixed media, artists were asked to take inspiration from Dutch still life, Romanticism, impressionism, realism, cubism, surrealism, abstract expressionism, outsider/raw art, or pop art. Robin Boucher, director of Virginia Tech's Perspective Gallery was the juror.

Whiteside graduated with a BA from Christopher Newport University's art department in 2007, and received an MFA from Radford University in 2011, where he is currently an adjunct instructor. He was recognized for his painting “Elegy to the US Republic no.5 (after Motherwell),” which he entered in the abstract expressionism category.

Kelley earned a BFA in Philosophy from West Virginia University in 2005, and will graduate in 2015 with a second BFA in studio art from Radford University. Her painting “Allie” reflects her current exploration of the recent trend of the selfie image, and renders the full-framed face in geometric planes to convey both the subject's familiarity as well as disconnected nature.

Both Whiteside and Kelley studied under RU’s Dr. Halide Salam.
