Four percussionists from Budapest, Hungary take the stage at Radford University’s Covington Center. Bringing a unique repertoire, Amadinda Percussion Group celebrates its 30th Anniversary US tour with a masterclass and performance at RU Dec. 4.

“Simply put, Amadinda is one of the most important percussion groups of the last 40 years,” said Rob Sanderl, assistant professor of music. “Their artistry and commitment to composing and commissioning new music for chamber percussion is an inspiration to all of us.”

Formed in 1984 by Károly Bojtos, Aurél Holló, Zoltán Váczi and Zoltán Rácz, the Amadinda Percussion Group inspired new works for percussion by modern composers.

According to its website, “Included among those who have dedicated a new piece for them, are three of the greatest names of the second half of the XXth century: John Cage, György Ligeti and Steve Reich.”

Along with this, Amadinda Percussion Group’s goals involve research of traditional percussion cultures, composition of new music by the members of the ensemble, and transcriptions of pieces from the history of classical music.

For 30 years, the group performed in 22 countries on four continents and continues to enthrall audiences. Its venues range from the Philharmonie Berlin, Wiener Konzerthaus (Vienna), Royal Albert Hall (London), National Concert Hall (Taipei), Meyerson Symphony Center (Dallas) and Carnegie Hall (New York).

Thanks to the generosity of the McGlothlin Fund through the International Education Center, RU is one of six stops on the group’s "AMADINDA 30" Anniversary US Tour 2014. Other sites include the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra (Huntsville, Alabama); the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (Indianapolis); Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois); and Peabody Conservatory (Baltimore).

As with many of the other tour locations, music students have the opportunity to learn from these acclaimed musicians during special masterclasses.

“We could not be more honored to have them here on campus to perform and work with the students,” Sandrel said.

All are welcome to attended AMADINDA 30 at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 4 at the Performance Hall in the Covington Center. Admission is free. For more information, call 540-831-5177.
