From March 4 - 7, Radford University’s Department of Dance showcased faculty and student works at the American College Dance Association’s conference at Virginia Commonwealth University. The ADCA is one of the largest dance conferences of its kind. The association’s primary focus is to support and promote the wealth of talent and creativity that is prominent throughout college and university dance. Conferences are the primary means for college dance programs to perform outside of their own academic setting and be exposed to the diversity within the national college dance world.

During the conference one student piece and one faculty piece was presented. The faculty performance titled “The Condition of Disappearance” was created by Professor Ji-Eun Lee. It was originally performed by eleven students. The student’s piece, a duet titled “The Luminous and The Aureate” was choreographed by dance senior Brigitte Manga and performed by Brigitte Manga and Celinna Haber.

For Sebrena Williamson, a dance major who performed in Professor Lee’s piece, the experience made a lasting impression. “Many students from other colleges approached me about the piece and said the music was so different from anything they had ever heard, and the piece made them want to jump on stage and dance alongside us. They also commented that they appreciated the piece’s powerful confrontation of a social issue, and that the discussion of the social issue was executed well. After I took Professor Lee’s class at ACDA, students also approached me about her class, saying they haven’t done choreographed partner work, or such detailed floor work in a technique class. In that moment, I felt pride for our dance program. I was proud to represent Radford at this conference. Professor Lee has truly improved our program, and I do believe that was apparent to other dance programs at ACDA this year,” said Williamson.

“The Condition of Disappearance” by Ji-Eun Lee, as well as other dance professors’ works, will be presented at the “Dancing On The Edge” from March 29 – 31 in Bondurant Auditorium, Preston Hall.
