Radford University Presents An Enchanting Evening of Ballet

Radford University’s Department of Dance is prepared for its biannual “Evening of Ballet” concert beginning Thursday, Nov. 14. This dance production includes excerpts from masterpieces of the classical ballet repertory as well as original contemporary works.

Five pieces are being performed by international guest artists Mikhail Ronnikov and Mari Sugawa and 26 dancer majors. The program includes selections from Tchaikovsky ‘s “Nutcracker,” Glazunov’s “Raymonda” and Minkus’ “La Bayadere.”

Two original contemporary ballet pieces are also in the offering. Ronnikov’s “Heads or Tails”, accompanied to Mozart’s “Serenade # 6,” is whimsical yet technically challenging! “Nocturne”, choreographed Dance Professor Inessa Plekhanova, is beautiful in its serene simplicity.

Ronnikov is well-known to RU dance audiences as his work has recently been featured in last semester’s “Dancing on the Edge” and the “Fall Dance Fest 2013.”  Originally from Moscow, he is currently a principal dancer and choreographer with Columbia Classical Ballet in South Carolina. Mari Sugawa, the other guest artist, is a principal dancer for the New Jersey Ballet Company.

The “Evening of Ballet” is being held at the Bondurant Auditorium in Preston Hall. Performances start at 7:30 p.m. each evening on Nov. 14 through Nov. 16. Tickets are $8 for the general public, $4 for children and are free for students, faculty, and staff at RU.  These are available online or at the Hurlburt Hall Information Desk (540-831-5420).
