Art for a Friday Night

Several Radford University student artworks are being exhibited around the New River Valley beginning on April 5.

On the RU campus, graduating MFA students Derek Reynolds and Jerome Sturm present their work at the Radford University Art Museum at the Covington Center through April 18. The exhibition's opening reception is on Friday, April 5 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Reynolds, who will receive his MFA in Graphic Design, is presenting a combination of graphic design and photography called “Digital Kaleidoscopes.”

"This body of work presents a methodology of taking photographs of lifeless agriculture and industrial machines, transforming the original identity," Reynolds said. "The use of image rendering creates colorful, concise and artistically abstracted images with perceived human or lifelike qualities.”

Sturm, whose degree will be in photography, presents a body of work titled “Dynamic Landscapes of Abandoned Places.”

With both large format prints and photographs shown in light boxes, the series consists of images created by blending several digital photographs together into one digital image using a process called High Dynamic Range, or HDR photography, Sturm said.

Off campus, the AIGA Radford, a student organization for graphic design majors, is hosting a one-night-only Spring Graphic Design Student Show. The public is welcome to join them at the Side Door this Friday, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. to see what works, out of 143, were selected for the show and which pieces won awards. The Side Door is 200 Third Ave. in Radford.

The RU Graduate Art Student Association’s work is being featured at Mish Mish in Blacksburg, located 125 N. Main Street. This exhibit also opens on April 5 and is scheduled to be up until April 30. The hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 :00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
