2017 Festival Performers Bios
Serap Bastepe-Gray is a faculty artist at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University where she directs the Conservatory Guitar Ensemble Program. One of the groups under her direction, The Youngs and The Restless, was recently awarded top prize in the University - Small Ensemble Division in the 2016 Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) Ensemble Competition. She performs as a soloist and in guitar duo with partner Julian Gray. Her arrangements for guitar quartet of music by Latin Grammy-winning composer Fernando Otero was performed at the Di Menna Center in NYC as part of the 2012 Guitar Foundation of America regional symposium. Her composition for guitar quartet and oboe, “Terra Originem,” was given its world premiere in October 2012 at the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore in conjunction with the African Renaissance exhibit.
Bastepe-Gray is also a faculty research associate, director of Peabody Occupational Health and Injury Prevention Program, and founding co-director of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Music and Medicine (CMM) initiative. She holds degrees in medicine and occupational therapy, and certification in performing arts medicine from American College of Sports Medicine. Active in both research and advocacy of musician’s wellness issues, she has lectured and presented workshops on musicians’ injury prevention and rehabilitation in public and professional forums such as National Guitar Workshop (NGW) Classical Summit, Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) Conference held in conjunction with the Aspen Music Festival, American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and the Bi-Annual Conference of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) in Porto Alegre, Brazil and Glasgow, Scotland. Her articles have appeared in various journals including Soundboard, The Journal of the Guitar Foundation of America, Communitas and Journal of Emergency Nursing. Her article in Soundboard titled “Healthy Hands: A primer in injury management for guitarists” has been placed as reference in various musicians’ health and wellness resources. Her work in developing a SmartGuitar© to study optimal work tension in guitar performance has recently been featured as a cover article in the fall issue of the Johns Hopkins Magazine.
Julian Gray is recognized as one of the most gifted and eminent performers, recording artists and teachers in the guitar world. He has appeared at many of the most prestigious guitar gatherings, including the Second American Guitar Congress, The Stetson International Guitar Festival, and Guitar Foundation of America Festivals, as well as concert series and festivals in London, New York, San Francisco, Dallas, Washington, DC, St. Louis, and on tour throughout the United States and Canada. His recording of music for guitar and strings by Paganini with the Diaz Trio was hailed by the Strad Magazine as the finest example of that genre on record.
Gray is known for his active involvement in expanding the guitar literature, both through his many arrangements of Baroque, Romantic and Modern compositions, and by commissioning new music for guitar. In addition to his publication of “Music of Domenico Scarlatti for Guitar Duo” by Mel Bay, he has edited works for Editions Orphee, Columbia Music, Subito Music, and Presser Editions. Most recently, he edited for Alfred Publications a volume dedicated to the music of J.K. Mertz (Op. 13 Bardenklange & Op. 4 Nocturnes). The Gray Duo are currently preparing a publication of world music for guitar duo and guitar ensemble.
As a performer of Early Music, Gray played bandora, lute and medieval harp as a member of The Baltimore Consort. As an accompanist and continuo player, he has performed with such vocal luminaries as Phyllis Bryn-Julson and Julianne Baird, and in productions of the Wolf Trap Opera.
He is the chair of the Guitar Department at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, and is Distinguished Artist in Residence and Director of the Guitar Studies Program at Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Guitar Foundation of America. He will be performing and teaching at guitar festivals including the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, NC, and the Peabody Summer Guitar Festival, in Baltimore, MD in July and August, 2017.
Adam Holzman, international performer, recording artist and teacher is hailed as “...polished and quite dazzling,” by The New York Times, “...brilliant!,” by De Gelderlander, Holland, and “...masterful!,” by The Toronto Star.
Five times a winner in major international competitions including First Prize at the 1983 Guitar Foundation of America Competition held in Quebec, Canada and Top Prize at the Ninth Concorso Internazionale di Interpretazione di Gargnano, Italy. Holzman has performed at the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and distinguished New York venues such The 92nd St. Y, Merkin Hall, and Carnegie Recital Hall. He is also a frequent guest in music festivals and series around the globe. His extensive international performances have taken him throughout Europe, Canada, Mexico, Central and Latin America.
Holzman's commitment to new music led him to co-commission Samuel Adler's first Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra. He has also premiered works by composers Robert Helps, Roland Dyens, and Stephen Funk Pearson among others.
Holzman, founder of the Guitar Department at the University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music is considered one of America’s leading guitar pedagogues. He heads a thriving guitar studio and his students have won an astounding array of international prizes.He has recently been named as Program Director for Classical Guitar Studies by the Brevard Music Festival.
From 1992-1994 Mr. Holzman held the title of “Maestro Extraordinario” given by the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Monterrey, Mexico, where he served as artist-in-residence. He was awarded the Ernst von Dohnanyi Prize for Outstanding Achievement from Florida State University and has been named The Parker C. Fielder Regents Fellow in Music at the University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Holzman has been featured on the covers of both Classical Guitar Magazine and Guitart Magazine.
A highly experienced and accomplished guitar duo, Klasinc & Lončar have been concertizing for over 25 years. This husband-and-wife duo has performed at numerous music festivals and concert series across the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe. Their performances have been described as "eye-opening," "outstanding," "one of the best," a "moving musical experience," "enlightening," "sparkling," and "performed with uncommon virtuosity and musicality of the highest order" by concert presenters and music critics. Klasinc & Lončar's concert programs often blend baroque, classical and romantic compositions with Lončar's original works, transcriptions, and arrangements of Croatian and other Mediterranean folk styles and music of the Viennese tradition.
Klasinc and Lončar formed their duo at the University of Graz, Austria, where they both studied the classical guitar with Marga Bäuml and Martin Mysliveček. They received their doctor of musical arts degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi. Klasinc & Lončar are winners of the Best Guitar Duo prize at the International Guitar Competition Toyoko Yamashita in Berlin.
The duo has given concerts at the Guitar Foundation of America Conference in Los Angeles, the Tucson Guitar Society, the San Francisco Guitar Society, the University of Ottawa, the University of Puerto Rico, the Marlow Guitar Series and the Croatian Embassy in Washington, DC, the European Guitar Teachers Association, the Appalachian GuitarFest, Tennessee Guitar Festival, the Eastern Shore Guitar Festival, the Vicksburg International Chamber Music Festival, and the Classical Guitar Ensemble Week in New Orleans. The duo has been features as soloists with the Gaudeamus Chamber Orchestra, the Karlovac Chamber Orchestra, and the Split Opera Chamber Orchestra in Croatia; with the Camerata Academica in Austria; and with the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra in the U.S.
Klasinc & Lončar can be heard on four CD recordings: “Images”–works for two guitars, “Con Spirito”–mostly Lončar's transcriptions for tw guitars and cello, CD for the music book “Danzas of Puerto Rico,” and the Aguado Guitar Concerts “Christmas Album.”
Huy Thanh Nguyen
An active classical guitarist, Huy Thanh Nguyen leads the Guitar and Accordion Department at Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory, Vietnam.
Huy Nguyen has performed in many concerts across cities and provinces of Viet Nam and recorded for Ho Chi Minh City Television. Together with two other guitarists from Ho Chi Minh City, in 2009 he had a two date performing tour in Singapore’s Art House. He tours the country extensively and has been invited to give master classes and perform in a number of festivals in the region, including the Malaysia Guitar Festival and Camp, Silpakorn International Guitar Festival, Thailand, Asia International Guitar Festival and Competition 2016, Thailand, and Tarrega International Guitar Festival and Competition 2016, Malaysia. In 2017, he is invited to perform in the 25th Long Island Guitar Festival, New York, US.
For his Department at the Conservatory, Huy Nguyen has developed a successful cooperation with Norwegian government funded transposition program, and also with many international guitarists in the world who come and give master classes as well as recitals in Ho Chi Minh City.
Huy Nguyen is a member of Saigon Guitar Quartet, which actively promotes ensemble music for guitar including duos and quartets. He is also the Artistic Director of Saigon International Guitar Festival, which he founded in 2014. This is the first and by far the only international classical guitar festival in Vietnam, attracting both guitarists and the general public in Ho Chi Minh City as well as the guitar enthusiasts from other provinces. The annual Saigon International Guitar Festival offers a rich variety of activities including workshops, master classes, lectures and concerts by international artists around the world.
Saigon Guitar Quartet
Saigon Guitar Quartet is an ensemble of leading guitarists in Viet Nam, an initiative to enrich the repertoire and encourage dialogues in the guitar musicianship. Its founding members are Huy Thanh Nguyen, Doan Tri Nguyen, Tho Ba Huynh and Phuong Hoai Tran, all having had an illustrious solo career before they started developing an ensemble repertoire together.
Saigon Guitar Quartet has been parts of many important events in the musical landscape of Ho Chi Minh City and Viet Nam since its inception in 2011, including the 55th anniversary gala concert of HCMC Conservatory of Music; the first opera production of HCMC Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera, Dido and Aeneas; the inaugural edition of Saigon International Guitar Festival in 2014 and the subsequent editions in 2015 and 2016; and annual concert tours to Ha Noi and Da Nang. In 2016, they were invited to play an all-guitar program in the City Opera House, the most prestigious classical music venue, in a series of educational concerts to attract new and young audiences to classical music.
Daniel Burton graduated from Radford University with a Bachelor’s degree of Science in Music with a concentration in performance. While at Radford University, Daniel achieved many accomplishments, which include: graduating with Summa Cum Laude Latin Honors, Dean's List, induction to the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, winner of the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges Award, election of the faculty to multiple Honors Recital, and was selected by audition to join the Radford University Honors Guitar Quartet. As a student of Dr. Robert Trent, Daniel performed on state-wide tours and also an international tour to Brazil with the Radford’s Honors Guitar Quartet. Upon graduation Daniel became a certified Suzuki guitar instructor and teaches at the Renaissance Music Academy in Blacksburg.
