Course Description

Instrumental Music - Overview 

Instrumental Music Level 1 Professional Development Course (PDLC) is based on contemporary experimental and practical research in Music Learning Theory, audiation, and beginning instrumental music instruction. Fundamental to the program is the belief that a music instrument is an extension of the human mind and body. In other words, singing in tune and moving one’s body in consistent tempo are prerequisite to playing in tune, and performing rhythmically and expressively on a music instrument. Students learn two instruments: 1) audiation instrument (instrument in the head) and 2) executive skill instrument (instrument in the hands). Certification faculties focus on teaching performance on an instrument that is an extension of audiation.

Level One PDLC

Level One PDLC consists of two parts: 1) Study of Music Learning Theory and 2) Practical Application of Music Learning Theory for instrumental instruction. Teachers gain an understanding of how students learn music and how to uncover individual differences among students during Study of Music Learning Theory.

Teachers learn to teach students through Jump Right In: The Instrumental Series for Recorder, in Practical Application of Music Learning Theory. Students who use the series begin to perform and improvise with their voice and instrument without notation. Through an emerging process similar to learning language, students continue to play by ear and improvise while learning to read and write notation with comprehension. As a result, they are motivated to continue performing on an instrument with enjoyment and impressive musicianship. They become intelligent music makers during and beyond their formal education. 

Course Dispositions

This course is intended to help you:

o   Understand a sequential approach to teaching recorder or beginning instrumental music through audiation development

o   Develop teaching skills that honor the ways students learn music

o   Understand and teach to individuals’ musical and developmental learning differences
