Welcome to the Radford University Planetarium

We have a few more regular summer shows on the Saturday mornings listed below.

In mid-July we will post here and on Facebook our schedule for our August 21 eclipse activities and shows.

On August 21 the sun-centered show "Eclipse 2017-Our Star, Our Sun" will return. This show will explore our own personal, private star...our sun...what powers it, what sunspots are, how its magnetic field works and how processes deep inside the sun affect our lives. We will also explore the Earth-moon-sun geometry of eclipses, include the geometry of the upcoming solar eclipse on Monday, August 21.

On Monday, August 21, we will be live streaming from a group led by Radford University Physics faculty member Dr. Michael Freed, who will lead a group to southeastern Tennessee to be in the path of totality.

In the meantime you can go here to read more about the eclipse.

"Eclipse 2017 - Our Star, Our Sun"

Thursday May 25

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

On August 21, 2017 we will have a great opportunity - weather permitting - to view a solar eclipse. From here in Radford, when our moon passes in front of our sun, we will see 96% of our sun covered. Join us as we explore our own star with the 20-minute full dome show "Sunstruck" from the Michigan Science Center. See what makes our sun shine, learn about sunspots , and how processes deep in the sun influence so much of our lives. We will then explore the geometry of various eclipses, including that of our upcoming eclipse, and will even take a peek at our sun if the sky is clear (using special solar viewing glasses).
