Blacksburg – Rackspace + Blacksburg = Racksburg... a hub of technological excellence surrounded by the great outdoors! Nestled in the mountains of western Virginia, Blacksburg features a vibrant technology-focused community centered around a major research university, Virginia Tech.
So, what do we deliver @ Racksburg? As one of the largest Rackspace innovation centers in terms of software developers and engineers, we have a history of delivering on a variety of products and technologies. The Blacksburg office was originally focused on our large scale hosted email business; this business has expanded from a relatively small operation to over 3 million paid mailboxes today, receiving over 100 million messages and generating one billion log entries per day. In addition to email, Racksburg works on some of the most high profile projects at Rackspace. The entire development for the next generation control panels - the primary customer interface for all of our products – is done in Blacksburg. We also have teams working on OpenStack - the open source cloud infrastructure behind our Cloud Servers product line, and one of the most popular and fastest growing open source projects out there. Openstack, Control Panels & Business Email are the foundations for Rackspace's future, and are being built right here in Blacksburg.
The Blacksburg office joined the Rackspace family as part of a startup acquisition, and we still maintain that startup culture today. We’re made up of small teams solving the technical challenges of the future. We pride ourselves on our fast-paced work environment and fanatical attitude towards our customers, products, as well as our fellow Rackers. We’re a tight-knit group that treats our co-workers like family. Have a technical problem? Everyone in the office is ready to help. We believe that we succeed best by working as a team. You’ll regularly find us pair programming or helping our teammates track down that annoying bug. And when we're not geeking out? We show love to the New River Valley by participating in Rack Gives Back events such as school supply drives, canned food drives and more. We even had a pie your manager day to fundraise for Relay for Life. Where else can you get away with throwing a pie in your manager's face?! Visit our office, and you’ll find Rackers eating together, playing a spirited game of ping-pong, or getting ready for the next tailgate.
As employees of Rackspace, we are not simply numbers; we are proud Rackers. With that title comes a responsibility that we all feel. It’s a responsibility to embody and live the values that make our organization unique and extraordinary. It’s also a natural responsibility because the values we embrace were created by us.
