Title: Rare earth elements as tracers: the evolution of ancient seawater and pharmaceuticals in drinking water
Date: Friday, November 10, 2017

Abstract: Rare earth element (REE) distributions vary significantly in natural waters, reflecting both REE sources and solution chemistry. Unlike modern oceans, the REE patterns in Archean (>2.5 Ga) chemical sediments suggest globally anoxic marine environments and limited contributions from continental weathering. In the modern environment, REE compounds used in medical diagnostic procedures can be also used as general proxies for pharmaceutical transport and fate.
