College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences
Research/Scholarly Project Award Call for Proposals
(AY 2012-13)

Eligible Faculty:
Full-time instructional faculty members in the College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences (teaching and research faculty and administrative/professional faculty whose contracts require scholarly engagement) are eligible.

Purpose and Eligible Activities and Support:
The purpose of a CHBS Faculty Research/Scholarly Project Award is to provide support to faculty members to expand their records of research/scholarly activitiy.  To that end, the expectation is that funded projects result in tangible products (articles, books, films, grant applications) that will eventually be peer reviewed or juried.  Funds may also be used for curriculum/pedagogical projects that fit within the framework of the scholarship of teaching, if they will eventually be submitted to peer review through publication and/or presentation.  The funds may only be used for professional development activities directly tied to the proposed research/scholarly project.

Eligible activities include any activity or research support tied directly to the ability of the faculty members to accomplish the goals identified in their proposal.  This could include summer salary (at the appropriate pro-rated amount), GA/student research stipend(s), buying a course release with appropriate approvals (at the adjunct replacement rate plus 7.65% FICA, since these are E&G funds), travel, registrations, supplies, and/or equipment.

Award:
The minimum award is $1,000.  The maximum award is $10,000.  Funds must be spent by June 08, 2013, for all award activities.  Funding may be used for summer salary and/or for other expenses submitted on a line-item budget.  If choosing the summer salary approach, please note the sum of all salary received during the academic year may not exceed 133% of the faculty member's 9-month salary.  If choosing the line-item approach, all purchase orders must be submitted through the purchasing process by May 1, 2013, and all funds must be spend no later than June 8, 2013.  Please carefully note, any materials not received by June 08, 2013 will not be covered by these research funds and rather, will be charged to the relevant departments in the following fiscal year.

Application:
Proposals should be no longer than 10 double-spaced pages.  The proposal should follow this outline:
1.  Project Title.
2.  Cover page with abstract.
3.  Description of the scholarly activity in terms comprehensible to a general audience.
4.  Significance of the project.
5.  Literature review or other appropriate review.
6.  Work done by the investigator on the project to date.
7.  Description of how the project will be accomplished (research design or project plan, as appropriate to the discipline).
8.  Individual qualifications to undertake the proposed activity.  Attach updated CV.
9.  Target for either external funding, peer-reviewed scholarly outlet, or juried exhibition.
10. Detailed, line-item budget with justification.  If only requesting a salary supplement, please so indicate in this section.

If the applicant has received a CHBS Summer Research Grant, RU Seed Grant, or RU Multidisciplinary Grant in the past two years, a description of the status of that project must be appended to the application.

Review Process:
Proposals are due to the CHBS Dean's Office by Monday, October 29th.  Please send the proposals in electonic form to Dr. Tod Burke.  The CHBS Honors and Awards Committee will review and rank the proposals and make recommendations to the college Dean for funding.  Applicants will be informed of the Dean's decision by November 26th.
