Five-day Alternative Break Project

URBAN RENEWAL AND LOCAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN DC

Dates:  Saturday, March 8 – Thursday, March 13

Student Fee:  $260.  Lodging and non-profit program costs included.  Transportation to DC, lunches and dinners not included.

Description: This five-day Alternative Break Project will involve 15 – 20 students in service projects with the non-profit organization, Think Local First DC, whose mission is to “work with independent businesses, consumers and policymakers to grow a sustainable, local economy in Washington DC.”

Washington DC is more than just politics and monuments.  Uncover the fabric of this multi-faceted city through an exploration of culture, economic development and urban renewal.  A primary service project will involve students working in teams in several different DC neighborhoods to uncover local stories, survey local business climate and in the end create a multimedia presentation to share the "real DC".  Students will meet organizational leaders, indie business celebrities and get a local look at an international city.

Other service activities will be arranged in cooperation with Think Local First, DC.  As a group, we will also select one or two National Museums to visit, and other cultural events.
