Dr. Alan Forrest

Alan Forrest, Ed.D. (College of William & Mary) is Chair and Professor in the Department of Counselor Education. Over the past 30 years he has held a variety of positions in both inpatient and outpatient mental health and substance abuse settings.  Dr. Forrest is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, and Nationally Certified Counselor who has extensive clinical experience in individual, couples, family, and group counseling.  He has facilitated training seminars, workshops, and retreats in the areas of loss, grief and bereavement; chemical dependency and family therapy; couples communication skill training; men’s issues in counseling; gender issues in counseling and psychotherapy; and meditation/mindfulness practices in counseling.  Dr. Forrest has been a consultant and trainer for various mental health centers, school districts, hospices, businesses, and organizations.  Dr. Forrest has served as President of the Virginia Association of Marriage & Family Counselors, Board Member of the State Board of Professional Counselors, and continues to maintain involvement in the field of family therapy on both the state and national levels. Teaching and research areas of interest include marriage/couples and family counseling, substance abuse counseling, the study of loss responses, gender issues in counseling, and mindfulness/meditation practices.
