Dr. Manyara, Charles
Gichana is currently an Associate Professor
in the School of Environmental and Physical Science at
Radford University,
Virginia. He graduated from
Cardinal Otunga High School
(Mosocho)
and proceeded to
Kenyatta University
(KU) for his Bachelor of Science Education
(BSc.Ed) in Mathematics and Geography.
Dr. Manyara has a Masters of Arts in Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing from
Ohio University
and a Ph.D. majoring in Technical Geography and Natural
Resource Management with an emphasis in Land Use Land Cover Change
Analysis from
Michigan State University.
Dr. Manyara has taught
courses in Advanced GIS and Cartography at
Wayne State University
(Detroit, MI), World Regional Geography at
Lansing
Community College (Lansing, MI) and the Geography of Africa at
Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI). He has also worked as a GIS technician for the
State of Michigan;
GIS and Aerial Photo interpretation and data collection Technician for
the National Resource Inventory for the Natural Resources Conservation
Service (NRCS);
Computerized Land Use Technology Specialist for the Soil Survey
Geographic Database (SSURGO).
Before joining Graduate School Dr.
Manyara
taught courses in Biology, Geography, and Mathematics at St. Gonzaga Gonza Isoge (Nyamira,
Kenya), St. Theresa's Girls High School Gekano (Nyamira,
Kenya), St. Charles Lwanga Nyansabakwa High School (Nyamira,
Kenya), Cardinal Otunga
High School Mosocho (Kisii, Kenya) and Gekendo High School (Nyamira,
Kenya). He left his teaching job as the Deputy Principal of Gekendo
High School to
pursue further studies.
Dr. Manyara's current assignment include
teaching classes in World Regional Geography (Africa and Asia),
Introduction to Geospatial Data, Field Research Methods
(Surveying and Mobile GIS) and Digital Image Processing.
Dr. Manyara also coordinates the Senior Seminar class for the graduating
seniors and oversees of the Geospatial Laboratories and the RU
GIS Center Data Servers.
