RU Spring 2008 CommencementOn Saturday, May 3, 2008, Radford University will conduct its Spring Commencement ceremonies, celebrating the achievement of nearly 2,000 students. To make the day enjoyable for you and your graduate, please review this information about the weekend's activities. Commencement Day traffic will be routed from Tyler Avenue (Va. Rte. 177, exit 109, off of I-81) to designated parking lots along Jefferson Street. Overflow parking will be in lots along East Main Street, along University Drive and at the Dedmon Center. If you park on the main campus, please use only designated lots or parking spaces. If possible, ride with other members of your party to limit congestion on campus. Commencement guests who will be using I-81 are also advised that those traveling in to Radford should expect delays as you near Radford from the north on I-81as the Virginia Department of Transportation has ongoing construction projects that might slow traffic on both lanes of I-81 between Roanoke and Radford at Ironto. Lots DD and EE (see commencement map) will be designated as handicapped parking lots. A limited number of other disabled parking spaces are available in Lot F in front of Muse Hall on Tyler Avenue. To avoid traffic congestion, we suggest that you use the shuttle bus services. The university will be providing a free shuttle service from the hotels on Tyler Avenue, Rt. 177(La Quinta Inn, Best Western, Super 8 and the Comfort Inn) to the main commencement ceremony site. Pick-ups will begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue until 30 minutes after the last ceremony ends. A connector loop from Cupp Stadium to the campus will be available connecting Lot A (in front of Young and Davis Halls) and Cupp Stadium for those going to Cupp Stadium for the College of Education and Human Development ceremony or parking there. An information center will be located in front of Fairfax Hall on Commencement Day. RU staff will be available to offer assistance, provide directions, distribute commencement programs and assist with disability/accessibility accommodations. if you or anyone in your party has a disability or need special accommodations, please contact the Disability Resource Office at (540) 831-6350(Voice/TTY. Party ‘drop-off” seating will be available in front of Fairfax Hall, with golf cart transportation to the ceremonies for those with limited mobility. Wheel chairs are not available on site. Sign language interpreters will be available at all commencement ceremonies. Handicap-accessible rest rooms are located in the residence hall buildings on Moffett Quad and in Peters Hall, convenient to the main ceremony site. WVRU, Public Radio 89.9, will broadcast the main ceremony live beginning at 10 a.m. Graduates and guests are also encouraged to listen to WVRU on commencement day for any weather-related updates and schedule changes. Please be advised that barring severe inclement weather, ie: lightning and thundershowers, the ceremonies will take place as scheduled. It is highly recommended that you bring rain gear -- but no umbrellas, please -- as showers will not prevent activities from being held outdoors. Please keep up-to-date on the forecast weather for the day and prepare accordingly. In the event of severe inclement weather, ie: lightning, individual ceremonies will be moved indoors and the main commencement ceremony will be cancelled. The schedule and locations of the indoor ceremonies is listed below. The indoor ceremonies for the colleges of Business and Economics, Science and Technology, Education and Human Development and Humanities and Behavioral Sciences at the Bondurant Auditorium will be limited to the graduates and guests who will be admitted by ticket. Graduates in those colleges can pick up tickets from their deans’ offices, college advising centers or at the colleges’ pre-graduation meetings during the week prior to Commencement. Due to space limitations at the inclement weather locations, the per-student allotment of tickets for the inclement weather sites will be determined by the various colleges. The Bondurant Auditorium ceremonies will be broadcast on closed circuit television to overflow viewing locations in the Hurlburt Auditorium and Cook Hall 107 for those unable to view the ceremonies in person. The College of Visual and Performing Arts and Waldron College of Health and Human Services’ indoor locations will be at the Pridemore Theatre in Porterfield Hall. For the College of Visual and Performing Arts ceremony, tickets will be required for the inclement weather ceremony. Tickets will not be required of the guests of the graduates for either of the Waldron College individual college ceremonies at noon and 1:30 p.m. No closed circuit broadcast of the ceremonies in Pridemore Theatre will be available. To maximize the enjoyment of the event for the over 10,000 guests expected to participate in the ceremonies, RU asks that all graduates and guests be sensitive to the needs of others.
As this is an important day in the life of the university community, proper attire and behavior by the members of the Class of 2008 are expected. All graduates must wear caps and gowns. Male graduates should wear shirt and tie, dress pants and dress shoes. Female graduates should dress in a professional fashion. Decorations of the commencement cap are discouraged and are all subject to the approval of the faculty marshals in the line-up area. Regalia signifying academic achievement are the only permissible additions to the cap and gown outfits. Consumption of alcoholic beverages on University property is prohibited. Unruly behavior and excessive celebrations inconsistent with the spirit of the event are also prohibited. Faculty marshals and campus security personnel will be instructed to ask those involved to desist and then instruct them to leave the ceremonies should such behavior continue. We also ask for your cooperation as far as post-commencement celebrations are concerned. The surrounding community is made up of our neighbors and we ask that all celebrations be handled in a way that is considerate of them and their property. Thank you and congratulations!
