RU Celebrates 100 Years of Education and Service
Charter Day BalloonsOne hundred years after it first opened its doors, Radford University and a multitude of its closest friends gathered on campus on March 24 for the university's Centennial Charter Day Celebration. The day-long celebration began with a ceremony that featured the Governor of Virginia as an honored guest, a keynote address from a philanthropic shoe giver, birthday cake and 100 red biodegradable balloons soaring into blue sky over the university's Dedmon Center. President Penelope W. Kyle opened the ceremony saying that the first announcement should simply be, "Happy Birthday Radford University." Outstanding Teachers Receive $25,000 McGlothlin Awards
McGlothlin WinnersAllyson Willis, a teacher at Watauga Elementary School in Washington County, and Steven Sizemore, a teacher at William Byrd Middle School in Roanoke County, were honored as the 2010 recipients of the prestigious McGlothlin Awards for Teaching Excellence during the "11th Annual McGlothlin Awards" ceremony held Tuesday, April 13 at Radford University. The Politics Behind the Creation of Radford University
History professor Mary Ferrari presented "1910: The Politics Behind the Creation of Radford University," in the Hurlburt Student Center as part of RU's Centennial Charter Day Celebration. To learn more, see the RU News Release.

RU Students, Alumni and Staff "Experience D.C."
A group of Radford University students, alumni and staff from Academic Engagement/Career Services and Alumni Relations recently spent a day networking in Washington, D.C. The junior and senior students selected to participate in "Experience D.C." were chosen for their desire to establish careers in the D.C. area.

RU alumni representing careers in the diplomatic arena, the legal field, media relations and Capitol Hill/legislative branch networked with students during site visits and over lunch. As a part of the inaugural "Experience D.C." program, students were able to tour the Indonesian Embassy, Library of Congress and the U.S. House of Representatives to see where some RU alumni spend their days working. Biology Student Publishes Ground-Breaking Research
Brandon NewmyerSophomore biology student Brandon Newmyer is working on research that may lead to solving obesity problems in humans. Newmyer, who has teamed with RU faculty mentor Mark Cline and Paul Siegel, the University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Animal and Poultry Sciences at Virginia Tech, was the lead author of an article published recently in the Journal of Neuroendocrinology. Annual Fashion Show Celebrates "100 Years of Style"
Fashion ShowGlamour, smiles, applause and cheers filled the evening recently during the Department of Interior Design and Fashion's annual awards ceremony and fashion show.

President Penelope W. Kyle, Interim Provost Joe Scartelli and Department of Interior Design and Fashion Chair Lennie Scott-Webber joined students, families, friends and faculty for the event which represented the culmination of a week-long senior showcase.

Randall Elected Student Government Association President
Randi-Lyn Randall has been elected the 2010-2011 Radford University Student Government Association President. In this role, Randall will serve as the official representative of the SGA and as a liaison between the student body and RU's administration. To learn more, see the RU News Release.

Centennial Charter Day Celebration Inspires Reflections by Alumni Ambassadors
Alumni AmbassadorsRepresenting the 65,000-strong Radford University alumni community, more than 100 RU alumni returned to campus to serve as Centennial Ambassadors for the Centennial Charter Day Celebration.

President Penelope W. Kyle welcomed the ambassadors and acknowledged their contributions toward the university "making its mark in its first century." Shirley Walton '60 spoke on behalf of the alumni community during the celebration's program in the Dedmon Center and lauded the ambassadors for the ways they have "excelled in their careers and personal lives."

Jim GarlandRU alumnus and entrepreneur Jim Garland '90 has turned his business into a soaring success. Garland's company, Sharp Details, specializes in cleaning and detailing aircraft and hangar facilities from Richmond to Connecticut. Alumnus's Work Featured in Prestigious Graphics Art Magazine
Zach Bush won several awards for his creative graphic work during his time at RU. A highlight of his career came recently when his work was featured on the front of Advanced Photoshop magazine. Read More>>

Radford's Art Parakhouski continues to add to his long list of postseason accolades as the 6-11 center has been named the VaSID State Player of the Year, as voted on by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) for the 2010 University Division All-State Men's Basketball Team.
