Henry Winkler to give keynote address at McGlothlin event

Henry Winkler, the iconic actor, author, director and producer, will be the keynote speaker at the 2013 McGlothlin Celebration of Teaching on April 18 at Radford University.

Henry WinklerWinkler, who became famous for playing Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli on the 1970s and '80s TV series "Happy Days," expanded his career into directing and producing films, plays and more than 20 TV series. He began his own production company to make high-quality children's programming and is the co-author of a popular Hank Zipzer series of children's books.

After being diagnosed at age 30 with dyslexia, Winkler made a commitment to help children with learning difficulties. He has received international awards in recognition of his service to children with special needs.

Alumnus receives honor from the Vatican

Patrick GoldenMonsignor Patrick Golden '87 received an unexpected notice from the Vatican on Feb. 1. It was all the more special because it would be among the last official notices from Pope Benedict XVI, who retired from the papacy on Feb. 28.

Golden, rector of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond, was notified by Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo that he and another monsignor, Timothy E. Kenney, had been conferred the pontifical honor of Chaplain to His Holiness in the Richmond Diocese. Golden said later, "I have great respect for Pope Benedict, and I commend his decision." The monsignor celebrated Mass just before the pope stepped down and now recalls that occasion as the last time he mentioned the pontiff's name during a service.
