RU Remembers Dr. Covington as Gentleman, Scholar and Friend

Dr. Douglas Covington
The entire Radford family was saddened to hear of the death of the university's fifth president, Dr. H. Douglas Covington, on Wednesday, June 27, 2012. Since then, remembrances have poured in to campus by email and phone, and hundreds have paid tribute to Dr. Covington on Facebook and Twitter. Overwhelmingly, they have honored him as a gentleman and a scholar.

Colleagues, students and friends recall his brilliant mind and his dazzling smile. They remember him as calm, courteous and self-deprecating—he could laugh at himself. At the same time, he spoke and wrote with eloquence and insight. Many say they were touched personally by his genuine affection for each person he knew, no matter his or her station in life.

Alumna Patrice Gentile Creates a Fashion Career Piece by Piece

Patrice Gentile and models
Patrice Gentile (fifth from the left) poses with models from the showing of her spring 2012 line.

Patrice Gentile '07 knew she wanted to be a fashion designer when she enrolled at Radford University. What she didn't know was where that choice would take her. Near the halfway mark in her college career, she knew she wanted to start her own business. Out of that revelation was born Aliceanna clothing.

The Pasadena, Md., native's high school guidance counselor recommended Radford to her. "I applied because the fashion design program sounded well-rounded and focused," said Gentile, who lived in Annapolis after graduating from Radford and started Aliceanna there. She now lives in Los Angeles.

Every designer's mark on the fashion world is unique. Gentile's is that she makes each piece by hand.
