Preston Hall houses administrative offices for the University auditor, the Assistant Vice President for Finance, the Assistant Vice President for University Services and an auditorium which seats 1,500 for concerts, lectures, plays and other activities. It also contains a four-manual Moller pipe organ. Because of its superior acoustics, the auditorium has been used by many groups to record music. The building was named in honor of Colonel William Preston, Captain of the Rangers in the French and Indian War, Colonel in the Revolutionary War, surveyor and Justice of the Peace in Fincastle and Montgomery Counties, Colonel of Frontier militia and a prominent figure on the early Virginia frontier.
