Music at Radford Highlanders Festival Brings Scots-Irish Heritage Home

RADFORD – Bagpipe and drum quartet Teribus will be the headline musical performance at the Radford Highlanders Festival on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m., on Radford University’s Moffett Field. Also performing are Jig-or-Not at noon and a festival favorite, Beggars’ Circus, returns to the festival for a 2 p.m. performance. The Appalachian Highlands Pipe and Drums, Warpipe and the Virginia Highlands Pipe and Drums will march in the festival parade through downtown Radford at 11 a.m., and present a massed band performance at the Scottish Clan march at 11:30 a.m.

The performances are part of weekend programming for the 14th annual festival being held in conjunction with Family Weekend and the university’s inaugural Welcome Back Reunion.

Teribus’ Celtic and tribal music is influenced by musical traditions from around the world, according to concert coordinator Heather Krantz of DLP Concert promotions. Led by musicians Kevin Hartnell, Richard Kean, EJ Jones, and Al Cofrin, Teribus has vast experience playing pipes and drums at outdoor festivals. “Their love of performance in a variety of settings is evident from the high energy and spirit of fun they bring to every show. Although their classical training and desire to please the musical academics in the crowd is always in the back of their minds, Teribus is equally likely to engage in antics never before seen in concert halls, creating the perfect combination for any festive event,” says Krantz.

Jig-or-Not bandBeggars’ Circus and Jig-or-Not (pictured at right) are traditional Celtic trios. Combined, there music spans more than 800 years. Music of Scots-Irish origin can be heard in Appalachian music that has been passed down for generations. The City of Radford was home to some of the first Scots-Irish immigrants of the 1770’s and a great majority of their descendants reside in the New River Valley.

The festival is a cooperative event between the City of Radford and Radford University to bring patrons a "taste of the Highlands. Festival weekend gets underway at 7 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 2, with a Scotch-tasting at the Ken Farmer Auction House, 105 Harrison St., Radford. Tickets are required and can be purchased by calling the Main Street Radford office at (540) 731-3656. Saturday morning begins with a 5k run and a pancake breakfast at the downtown Farmers Market at 8 a.m. The breakfast is $6.
