CEHD Honors RU Faculty For Achievements

RADFORD – Michael Moore, a professor in the Department of Exercise, Sport and Health Education, and Jennifer Jones, an assistant professor in the School of Teacher Education, have received the outstanding scholarly activity award from Radford University’s College of Education and Human Development for the 2008-2009 academic year.

CEHD AwardsAward criteria are that faculty must have completed or published writing in a professional publication or other innovative or creative application of scholarship and should represent a significant contribution to the research and/or practice in an academic year.

The decision to select one faculty member was difficult. “We received a number of truly excellent nominations and had a very tough time deciding who should get the recognition. We finally came to an impasse and chose to recognize two individuals,” says Kristan Morrison, assistant professor in the School of Teacher Education.

Moore’s article, “The Use of a Tuning Fork and Stethoscope to identify Fractures,” was published in the Journal of Athletic Training, a leading journal in athletic field training. Jones’ award was based on her article “Comprehension Strategy instruction in Core Reading Programs” published in the Reading Research Quarterly, considered one of the leading magazine in its field. Other faculty receiving recognition were Jill Summerlin, outstanding performance award; Wendy Eckenrod-Green, outstanding teaching award; and Susan Miller, outstanding faculty service award.

Summerlin, who works in the Teaching Resources Center, was described as “quiet, welcoming, knowledgeable, resourceful and helpful.” Her nomination form reads, “She is always willing to find a solution to a problem. She is definitely a team player. When one of her co-workers needed to be out for an extended period of time this past year to a serious family illness, she not only continued to efficiently do her own job but took on many of the co-worker’s responsibilities.”

“Dr. Eckenrod-Green has taught me more in one school year than I have learned in my entire collegiate career,” writes a student who nominated Eckenrod. “The way she cares about her students is unlike anything I have ever experienced with a professor. She engages us to critically think about difficult issues that will come up in our careers.“

Miller is a full time special purpose faculty member in education, sport and health education but has assumed all duties of a tenure track faculty member.  She assists in New Student Orientations for freshmen and transfer students, is the sponsor for the majors club, helps with the ESHE Saturday morning program and advises more than 60 majors.
