Cellist to Perform Concert at RU
RADFORD Cellist J.W. Turner will present a concert of new compositions at the Covington Center Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 30. Admission is free to the concert. The concert will feature the world premiere of “Waves of Amber” by RU music faculty Bruce Mahin. All music features new creative works by composers written since 2000. Turner is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music. He now teaches at Winston-Salem State University. Turner’s repertoire, while consisting almost entirely of 20th century and contemporary works for solo cello, encompasses an increasingly international range of styles. The Meditations series has featured works from Scotland, South Africa, Iran and Vietnam, and works from Japan, Korea and Ireland are in preparation. Furthermore, Turner has been proud to collaborate with several outstanding composers from the Mid-Atlantic region, and is collecting a growing list of dedications. His upcoming projects will include an expansion of work with electronic media, including the construction of a digital, cello-like instrument with composer Tohm Judson. The concert is sponsored by the Radford University Center for Music Technology, Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity and the Campus Activities Board at Radford University. |
