High-Tech Treasure Hunt Highlights Geography Week at RU
RADFORD -- GPS-equipped students scampering across campus in search of treasure and prizes is one of the featured events of Geography Awareness Week at Radford University which begins Tuesday. The department, along with the RU Geography Club, has scheduled events to commemorate the national event designed to promote the importance of the discipline to the public and schools. National Geography Awareness Week runs Nov. 16-22. On Tuesday, students will participate in a geocaching event, a high-tech treasure hunt using handheld GPS units. Students are encouraged to organize in teams to compete against each other during the event. Students can register in the Department of Geography office at Cook Hall, room 131. The geocaching game beings at noon, and concludes at 5 p.m. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Geography Club will have a geography information table and hold a bake sale at the Hulburt Student Center from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The club also will hold a raffle those two days to give away a new GPS handheld unit. Tickets are $2 each, and there is no limit on the number of tickets individuals may purchase. On Wednesday, the environmental documentary film, The 11th Hour, will be shown at 8:30 p.m. in the Bonnie Auditorium. Admission is free. Approximately 1.5 million students have participated in geography-related activities since President Ronald Reagan signed legislation in 1987 establishing the third week in November as Geography Awareness Week.
