RU Students Package Meals for Haiti Relief

RADFORD -- Hundreds of Radford University students gathered in Muse Banquet Hall last week to package more than 40,000 meals for Stop Hunger Now, an organization supplying food and other goods to Third World countries including the people of Haiti, who were affected by a catastrophic earthquake in January.

Stop Hunger NowLucinda McDermott Piro of Canterbury Episcopal Fellowship, who organized the event with RU Campus Ministry Association, WVRU and the Student Government Association, said they had hoped to have at least 250 student volunteers.

The response from the RU community far exceeded expectations.

“We had 530 students show up,” McDermott Piro said. “Several RU staff and faculty commented that they had never seen an event bring together as many different factions of the university. And all were working together cooperatively for a higher good. It was a beautiful thing.”

McDermott Piro said fundraising for the event exceeded their goal of $10,000. The extra money will be donated to a Stop Hunger event at Virginia Tech in April.

Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world.
