Radford University Sustainability Efforts Recognized

RADFORD -- Radford University was one of 670 signatories of the Presidents’ Climate Commitment in 2009 recently highlighted in the AASHE Digest 2009, an annual review of sustainability in higher education by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), whose mission is to empower higher education to lead the sustainability transformation.

President Penelope W. Kyle signed the American College and Universities Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) in a ceremony on October 21, 2009 and RU joined almost 700 other educational institutions committed to achieving climate neutrality.

The Sustainability Steering Committee (SSC), chaired by Dennis Grady, dean of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies, is developing RU’s plans required for compliance with the PCC. A recent survey to measure the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the commuting habits of RU’s students, faculty and staff – gathered by RU’s Organizational Research Team and the Center for Social and Cultural Research – will complement data generated by the SSC’s Measurement Working Group about RU’s carbon emissions production.

The results of the commuting study and more information on RU’s sustainability activities are available at www.radford.edu/rugreen/ .
