Time-Travel Book Takes Young Readers to Civil War Battlefields

RADFORD – Stonewall Hinkleman and the Battle of Bull Run, the story of a “smart aleck” teenager whose parents spend their weekends as re-enactors on historic Civil War battlefiends, has been released by Michael Hemphill, interm director of Radford University’s University Relations Office, and former newspaper colleague Tom Angleberger. The book, published by Penguin Group, is part of the series Dial Books for Young Readers.

Stonwall Hinkleman cover imageWith the approach of the Civil War’s sesquicenetennial, the authors hope the book inspires a new generation to learn more about Amercia’s defining moment in history. The historically accurate book is written as a time-travel story that takes Stonewall Hinkleman from a reluctant re-enactor to “the world’s most reluctant Civil War soldier,” writes Hemphill. “The Civil War is the most important event in American history, but its relevance is increasingly lost among today’s schoolchildren. We hope that Stonewall Hinkleman will recapture their imaginations and interests,” he says.

Hemphill is co-owner of Civil War Journey Battlefield Tours. Riddleburger is author of The Quickpick Adventure Society and the soon-to-be-released Origami Yoda.
