RU Advocacy Day at General Assembly Today

RADFORD – Forty students, a group of faculty, Board of Visitors members and President Penelope W. Kyle take to the halls of the General Assembly today to share the Radford University story with the Commonwealth’s legislators.

Called RU Advocacy Day and spearheaded by the Radford University Student Government Association, the event will give the RU students – all volunteers – an opportunity to become familiar with Virginia’s legislative process and their respective delegates and senators who are gathered for the 2009 session.

“Our students will tell their own story of their learning experience at RU and how meaningful and important those experiences have been to them,” said Norleen Pomerantz, vice president of student affairs.

Pomerantz said that this year’s student representation is the largest in the seven-year history of the RU Advocacy Day program and that it will feature “students who are leaders and can share their exemplary experiences on campus.”

RU’s SGA, the campus chapter of the NAACP, the campus group Men of Standards, and the College of Business and Economics’ Student Managed Investment Portfolio Organization (SMIPO) will be among the campus groups represented by the volunteers.

A highlight of the Richmond visit, which is listed on the General Assembly calendar as “Radford University Day," will be when the RU group is recognized on the floor of the two houses. A series of meetings with state executive leaders is also planned for the group.
