Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra Headlines RU's January Arts Calendar
RADFORD Radford University’s January calendar of events includes a performance by the prestigious Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra, a concert by RU contralto Clarity James and a diverse selection of art exhibitions. The university’s Performance Series will present the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra in concert on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 8 p.m., in Bondurant Auditorium, Preston Hall. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 9 a.m., at the Hurlburt Hall ticket office. Admission is $15 general public, $7.50 children, and free with RU I.D. The orchestra was founded in the mid-1800s in Dublin, Ireland, and quickly gained an international reputation as one of most achieved and recognized names in the world of Irish classical music. Joe Scartelli, dean of RU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, said, “Radford University is proud to participate in the first tour of the United States in the history of the orchestra. Under the baton of Colman Pearce, the program will include works of Glinka, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky in a rare, full symphony orchestra event on the RU campus.” Additional January arts events are as follows:
* RU Art Faculty Show, January 29 - February 20, Gallery at the Covington Center. Reception on Thursday, Jan. 29, 5 p.m. Exhibit showcases a vast array of two- and three-dimensional work. Free admission. * Exhibition of art by Betty Moore, January 29 - March 27, Gallery 205, Powell Hall. Reception on Thursday, Jan. 29, 5:30 p.m. Features watercolor paintings by Moore, an RU alumnus and former art educator at Christiansburg High School. Free admission. * Graduate Art Student Association Exhibition, January 29 - March 13, Bondurant Center Foyer Cases, 1129 East Main St., Radford. Students in RU’s graduate art courses mount their own installation of various media.
