Celebrate RU’s 100th Birthday on Charter Day

RADFORD -- Radford University will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of its charter with a day full of festivities on March 24 that will serve as the pinnacle event of the university’s year-long Centennial celebration.

It begins at 11 a.m. with the Centennial Charter Day Celebration in the Dedmon Center. A birthday party for the university will also be held later in the day.

RU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community are invited to join the celebration as RU commemorates 100 years of excellence in education and service.

Blake Mycoskie, founder and “chief shoe giver” of TOMS Shoes, will deliver a keynote address at the morning celebration and will also speak with students later in the day. TOMS Shoes is a footwear company focused on socially responsible free enterprise. The company donates a pair of shoes to a needy child for every pair it sells.

RU students have been working with TOMS Shoes on a Centennial Service Project. For every 1,000 pairs of shoes purchased at tomsshoes.com by RU students, alumni and friends, an RU student will earn the opportunity to join TOMS Shoes staff and volunteers at a drop off event to impoverished children around world.

In addition to Mycoskie, a number of other visitors and dignitaries will be on campus for Charter Day festivities.

The signing of the Radford charter took place on March 10, 1910 when the school was known as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Radford. RU students will be on spring break the week of March 10, leading the university to convene the birthday celebration two weeks later.
