"String Extravaganza" Rescheduled to February 7

RADFORD – Due to inclement weather, “The String Extravaganza,” part of a series of events celebrating Radford University’s Centennial year, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Feb. 7, at 5 p.m. The original date was Saturday, Jan. 30, at 4 p.m. The event will be held in the Performance Hall of the Covington Center. The concert features all string ensembles in the Renaissance Music Academy of Virginia, including suzuki violin, cello and guitar groups, junior orchestra and the RMA chamber orchestra. The performers range in age from four years through adult.

The Renaissance Music Academy of Virginia is the oldest, largest and most established non-profit community music school in the region, where students of all ages and levels of ability can develop their talent and a sustaining love for music. More than 350 students from throughout the New River Valley are enrolled in music lessons in the RMA, including many families from Radford. Scholarships for music study are available to families demonstrating financial need.

The concert was made possible by the Concert Task Force of the Community Centennial Committee. The Community Centennial Committee is a part of the Radford University Centennial Steering Committee, the key organizer for this significant milestone in RU history. Task  force members instrumental in bringing the RMA to campus include Joe Scartelli, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs; Ian Fortier, director of the City of Radford’s Glencoe Museum; Kathleen Harshberger, owner of the Kathleen Harvey Harshberger School of Protocol; and Jo Kiernan, special assistant to RU President Penelope W. Kyle.

The String Extravaganza is particularly appropriate for families and children. The event is free and open to the public.
