Appalachian Awareness Day is February 13 at RU

RADFORD -- Appalachian Awareness Day is Friday, Feb. 13, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., in Radford University’s Hurlburt Hall Auditorium. The theme is mountaintop removal awareness.

This annual event, sponsored by the Appalachian Events Committee, is free and open to the public. The schedule is as follows:

10 a.m. – Mountaintop removal/coal mining focused music featuring Fritz Schindler, Tom Steele and Bud Bennett

11 a.m. – Elaine Purkey, community organizer, activist and songwriter

Noon – Larry Gibson, mountaintop removal activist; interviewed in People magazine, on TV’s “CNN Legends” and award nominee for Unsung Heroes.

1 p.m. – Kathy Selvage, Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards, community organizer and activist

2 p.m. – “Eating Appalachia: Selling Out to the Hungry Ghost’ by Deborah McLaughlin, RU Department of Dance faculty

3 p.m. – RU professor Theresa Burriss’ mountaintop removal multimedia project
