RU Welcomes Over 500 New Alumni During 2010 Winter Commencement Ceremonies
RADFORD -- Family members and friends gathered with Radford University faculty and administrators on Friday, Dec. 17 and Saturday, Dec. 18 to celebrate the graduation of over 500 graduate and undergraduate students during RU’s second Centennial year commencement ceremonies.
Nursing classmates Alex Wirt and Amber Gilbert show a little individuality with their graduation caps as they get ready for the commencement ceremony on Dec. 18. Both graduated with Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees. Wirt, from Floyd, Va., graduated with distinction and Gilbert, from Axton, Va., graduated magna cum laude.
Saturday’s ceremonies capped two days of activities honoring RU’s winter class of 2010 and included two events in Preston Hall: a 10 a.m. joint commencement for the Colleges of Business and Economics, Science and Technology, Visual and Performing Arts and Waldron College of Health and Human Services, and a 1 p.m. joint commencement for the Colleges of Education and Human Development and Humanities and Behavioral Sciences.
President Penelope W. Kyle formally conferred degrees upon more than 450 undergraduates during Saturday’s ceremonies and Kay Jordan, president of the Faculty Senate, presented congratulatory greetings. Senior Class President Steven Teresi offered a moment of reflection and Randi-Lynn Randall, Student Government Association president, made congratulatory salutations.

On Friday, RU honored 45 graduate students who completed their graduate studies during a hooding and commencement ceremony, 35 nurses who were pinned during a ceremony honoring their achievement and two ROTC cadets who were commissioned as U.S. Army officers.
Radford University graduate Jason Mabry holds his four year-old son Dylan as they celebrate after the graduation ceremony on Dec. 18. Mabry graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science & technology. He was one of several students who earned degrees through the distance education program this year. Mabry is from Martinsville, Va.
Among the most popular of the 466 undergraduate degrees conferred were: nursing (37), psychology (35), interdisciplinary studies (34), management (30), exercise, sport and health education (25), marketing (22) and art (22).
Among the most popular of the graduate degrees conferred were: education and educational leadership (12), Master of Business Administration (12), special education (7) and corporate and professional communication (4).
The Radford University Spring Commencement will be Saturday, May 7, 2011.
