Bookstore Ready to “Dread the Red”

RADFORD -- Showing off your Radford Highlander pride has never been hotter with the new “Dread the Red” t-shirt now hitting the shelves of the Radford University Bookstore. With more than 800 “Dread the Red” t-shirts sold last year alone, the bookstore expects this year's design to be just as widely popular across campus.

"Dread the Red" t-shirts are now available.

“We are getting some very nice comments about the design this year,” said RU Bookstore Manager Benjie Saunders. “We are happy to be involved with the 'Dread the Red' shirt because it helps to build school spirit. I also like the fact that it is a student-designed item.”

Coordinated by the Radford University Student Government Association, this year's fourth annual “Dread the Red” contest received more than 20 competitive entries. The two winning entries for the t-shirt's front and back logos were submitted by freshman Lee Plummer, from Georgia, who designed the “RU” on the back, and graduate student Layden Williams, of Salem, who created the front design depicting the Highlander. The winning entries took a new creative twist by incorporating graphic images into the textual design.

“We have never done that before,” said Karen Valluri, SGA athletic promotions coordinator and president of student programming and campus events. The contest is part of the SGA's School Spirit and Pride initiative, which includes promoting RU athletic fan support, with the T-shirt being a strong common sight of Radford red solidarity at sporting events.

“By purchasing this shirt you are showing your school spirit,” said Valluri. “By wearing the shirt, you are supporting our fellow athletes.”

The new “Dread the Red” t-shirt is $10 at the bookstore located in Dalton Hall and is available in sizes small to XXL. For more information, call (540) 831-7109.
