RU Students, Alumni and Staff "Experience D.C."

RADFORD -- A group of Radford University students, alumni and staff from Academic Engagement/Career Services and Alumni Relations recently spent a day networking in Washington, D.C. The junior and senior students selected to participate in “Experience D.C.” were chosen for their desire to establish careers in the D.C. area.

RU alumni representing careers in the diplomatic arena, the legal field, media relations and Capitol Hill/legislative branch networked with students during site visits and over lunch. As a part of the inaugural “Experience D.C.” program, students were able to tour the Indonesian Embassy, Library of Congress and the U.S. House of Representatives to see where some RU alumni spend their days working.

Alumni shared with students advice and leads to internship options in Washington, D.C., talked about how they found their own first jobs on "the Hill" and provided information about where to locate affordable housing options.

“One alumni said during lunch that the RU years were the best years of her life and she wanted now to be able to help other students while another alumni described his job as a front seat to history,” said Kathy Jordan, Director of Academic Engagement and Career Services. “It was a busy, full day and students talked excitedly on the way home about their desire to get a chance to come back and work in D.C. and planned to follow up with the alumni who were so inspirational.”

Alumni Patty Deloatche ‘82, Jeff Mackinnon ‘85, John Rainbolt ‘01, Jay Rupert ‘95 and Victor Shiblie ‘89 participated in the “Experience D.C.” event.
