RU Safe and Secure Following Thursday Night Off-Campus Shooting
RADFORD -- The Radford Department of Police made an arrest early Saturday in connection with Thursday night's shooting incident that resulted in the death of a Christiansburg man. 42-year-old Radford resident Phillip Eugene Beale Sr. has been charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. The university received its first report of the shooting at 9:25 p.m. At 9:34 p.m., the university initiated its message-alert system and issued the Shelter in Place order. Four additional update alerts were sent over the course of the next 5 1/2 hours via email, text and voice messages, the campus cable station and university website. Meanwhile, tactical teams from RUPD, RPD and surrounding jurisdictions as well as firearm-sniffing dogs performed a building-by-building sweep of the RU campus. At 2:55 a.m. Friday, the decision was made to lift the Shelter in Place order once authorities determined there was no credible threat remaining to the campus community. The 9:10 p.m. shooting Thursday night prompted Radford University to issue a Shelter In Place order after the shooting suspect was seen fleeing toward RU's campus. Floyd Wilfred-Linn Wright, Jr., 33, from Christiansburg, was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. Neither the victim nor the shooting suspect are Radford University students and the homicide is being treated as an isolated incident, not a random act of violence. "We applaud the response of the law enforcement agencies who responded to the situation, and to our students, faculty and staff who calmly complied with the Shelter in Place order," said RUPD Chief Colleen Roberts. "By working together, we were able to safely and swiftly secure the campus and bring this matter, from the university's perspective, to a satisfactory conclusion." |
